General questions about Ecoglide anti-fouling system
What is anti-fouling?
Anti-fouling is like giving your boat a glam makeover and then adding a little "don’t even
think about it" attitude for all the clingy marine creatures out there. Without it, your boat would be the hottest real estate on the ocean floor, attracting every barnacle, algae, and sea slime in sight. And trust me, they don't just come to hang out—they move in, multiply, and throw a full-on rager that’ll slow your boat down and mess with your fuel efficiency.
Think of anti-fouling as your boat's personal bouncer. It creates a barrier that keeps the party
crashers at bay, so your vessel can glide through the water with all the grace and speed it was meant to. Skip this step, and you’re basically inviting a barnacle infestation to drag you down and turn your smooth sailing dreams into a slow, sticky nightmare. So, unless you’re into scrubbing sea gunk off your hull every 2-3 years, anti-fouling isn’t just necessary—it’s non-negotiable.
Why should I ditch traditional bottom paint?
Alright, let’s get real about anti-fouling paint—it’s basically the bad relationship you know you
need to end. Sure, it keeps your boat looking slick, but at what cost? And here’s the kicker: it’s not just the fish and coral that are getting the short end of the stick. That same toxic brew is bad news for you too. Breathing in the fumes or even just getting it on your skin? Not exactly a spa day – and that might soon be illegal. That’s right, the powers that be in Europe are cracking
down on this toxic brew. The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the new Biocidal Product Regulation are tightening the screws on anti-fouling paints, which means your days of slathering that poison on your hull could be numbered.
So, while you’re out there trying to protect your boat, you might be doing more harm than good—to the ocean, to yourself, and to anyone else who loves the water.
So, why not trade in that toxic old paint for something that’s actually good for the planet? There
are greener, cleaner options that will keep your boat sleek and don't come with toxic chemicals and screaming Greta Thunberg fans. Ditch the poison, and sail into a future where you’re protecting the seas, not polluting them. It’s a win-win—your boat stays beautiful, and the ocean stays alive and thriving. Now that’s the kind of trade-up we can all get behind!
How does this anti-fouling system work?
Our system keeps marine hitchhikers at bay because the PIB Shark Scales are so slick that even the most determined barnacle can't grab hold. Why shark scales? Well, their slick design isn’t just for show; it cuts drag like a pro. And don't worry about wear and tear—PIB is practically indestructible, so you can expect it to outlast even your grandkids' attempts to "borrow" the boat.
What kind of surface can Ecoglide adhere to?
Pretty much anything. With the help of our primer, our PIB Shark Scales can adhere to almost any surface. Our activator creates a chemical reaction that causes the PIB to become soft and sticky, allowing the scales to bond seamlessly with each other and the hull of the ship.
How do I get rid of my old bottom paint?
Alright, so you’ve decided to tackle the Herculean task of removing old toxic bottom paint from
your boat. First, let’s talk gear. You’re going to need more than just a t-shirt and jeans for this job—you’re dressing for chemical spill.
For starters, you’ll need a scraper that could double as a medieval weapon because these critters aren’t going down without a fight. Picture yourself in a full hazmat get-up, looking like you just escaped from a post-apocalyptic movie, with gloves, goggles, and a suit that makes you the most noteworthy, albeit perplexing, figure on the dock. The barnacles will put up a fight, but you’re bigger—and better dressed for it!
Step two is sanding: Think of it as your boat's spa day—except instead of a relaxing massage, you're giving it a vigorous rubdown that would make a power tool blush. Prepare for a sandstorm of toxic dust.
Not what you signed up for? If you’re starting to feel like you’ve just walked into a Chernobyl-themed escape room, it might be wise to call in the professionals. They’ll tackle the mess, handle the hazards, and leave you free to enjoy your boat without all the drama.
Does EcoGLide harm the local marine environment?
EcoGlide Shark Scales are made from polyisobutylene rubber, or PIB for short, is the unsung hero of the rubber world, and no, it's not here to poison anyone. In fact, you probably have a more intimate relationship with it than you think. It’s so safe that it’s used in products you put in your mouth (chewing gum) and in life-saving medical supplies (insulin syringes).
PIB is like the perfect houseguest: it respects your space, keeps things clean, and respects
everyone’s boundaries. So, rest easy knowing that PIB is here to keep your boat—and the ocean—safe, clean, and entirely toxin-free.
Can I install the system myself, or should I find a proffessional to do it?
Yes. Once you’ve liberated your hull from its toxic past, it’s time to give it a fresh new look with our recycled primer. It helps things stick so well you'll wonder if they’re part of the ship!
Next, it’s time to apply our Shark Scale. Begin at the top and work your way down, like laying tiles but with the precision of a surgeon. Remember, every scale needs to be sprayed with our activator and every air bubble banished with a seam-roller. Channel your inner perfectionist and roll those bubbles away like you’re smoothing out a wrinkled shirt. Finish it off with a non-toxic copper coating that’ll make your boat shine and keep the marine life from free loading on your ride.
If you find yourself in over your head, don’t panic! Our team of professionals is on standby to help you save the day. Just give our hotline a call and we will walk you through it.
Or, if you'd rather avoid the DIY drama altogether, there are companies ready to handle the installation for you. Just sit back, relax, and let the pros do the hard work while you enjoy a well-deserved weekend.
Isn't Copper Paint Harmful to Marine Life?
Not with our innovative non-ablative PIB/copper finish! They’re designed to release only tiny amounts of copper—well below harmful levels for marine life. This keeps the surrounding water safe while still protecting your boat.
Did you know? Copper is a naturally occurring element in oceans, and marine organisms are already adapted to low levels of it. Our coatings mimic these natural conditions, offering top-notch protection without the environmental guilt!
